Mayor's Office of New Urban Mechanics

Amy Mahler is the Applied Policy Fellow for the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics (MONUM), the City of Boston’s civic research and design team. Previously, she served as Policy Fellow for Mayor Kim Janey’s administration and graduated from Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) as a Rappaport/Boston Urban Scholar in the Mid-Career Master's of Public Administration program. While at school, she worked on Mayor Kim Janey’s transition in the Transportation and Climate Justice subcommittee, participated in the Economic Development Seminar, and led a panel of women mayors in a discussion of COVID response and women's leadership for the HKS Women in Power conference. Prior to her time at the Kennedy School, she was the Director of SPARK Boston, Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s 20- to 35-year-old leadership and engagement council. As Director, she recruited, selected, and led the annual council cohort, composed of 20- to 35-year-old Boston residents across neighborhoods and industries who advise City leaders on young adult priorities and create community. Before SPARK Boston, she has worked as the chief of Policy’s Policy Manager, Mayor’s Liaison for the South End, the Bay Village, Allston, and Brighton, Press Secretary for Governor Patrick’s Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and more. Mahler graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. She is originally from South Florida, got her start in politics through LGBTQ+ activism and school funding showdowns, and lives in Dorchester with her husband and dog. You can find her reading on the T, walking her dog, watercoloring in a park, or standing in line at her favorite bakery waiting to get the perfect pretzel croissant.
