Our Commitment to Sustainability
“Sustainable development calls for concerted efforts towards building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and planet.”
We believe innovation has the power to improve the human condition, and that meaningful progress must consider both people and the planet. As a community that brings together innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, corporations, and changemakers, Venture Café Cambridge has an opportunity to connect people and ideas to the challenges that matter most.
We are committed to creating a community where innovation can contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and equitable future. We do this by:
- Creating opportunities for economic empowerment through programming, connections, and resources that help innovators build businesses, create jobs, develop new solutions, and contribute to a more inclusive economy.
- Practicing sustainability in our own operations by continually looking for ways to reduce waste, use resources responsibly, make thoughtful procurement decisions, and create more sustainable events and experiences.
- Bringing people together around global challenges by creating space for our community to learn, exchange ideas, and take action on issues including climate, sustainability, responsible innovation, and equitable economic development.
- Connecting innovators to knowledge and resources so that people working on sustainable solutions can share their ideas, find collaborators, access expertise, and turn conversations into meaningful action.
- Inspiring a broader view of innovation by encouraging our community to think beyond what is possible and ask what is responsible, inclusive, and beneficial for the people and communities impacted by innovation.
We believe innovation isn’t just about creating what comes next. It’s about creating a future worth building.
Our Commitment to Racial Equity
We believe innovation should create opportunity, expand possibilities, and improve lives. But we also recognize that access to opportunity has never been equal. Systemic racism and inequity continue to shape who has access to resources, networks, capital, leadership, and the opportunity to have their ideas heard.
At Venture Café Cambridge, we believe that innovation is stronger when everyone has the opportunity to participate. We stand with the people and organizations working to advance racial equity and social justice, and we recognize that building a more equitable community requires ongoing learning, action, and accountability.
We are committed to advancing racial equity through:
- Our Platform: We use our community and programming to amplify voices, ideas, and experiences that have historically been underrepresented. We create opportunities for people to share their perspectives, build connections, and engage in conversations that advance equity and social justice. We believe our platform is most powerful when it helps people who might not otherwise meet find one another.
- Our People & Practices: We strive to build an inclusive environment where people are treated with dignity and respect. This means continuing to learn about bias and inequity, examining our own practices, and creating opportunities for our team and community to grow. We seek to embed equity into the way we make decisions, build partnerships, design programs, and engage with our community.
- Our Partnerships: We believe meaningful change happens through collaboration. We seek partners, sponsors, speakers, and community organizations who share a commitment to creating more inclusive and equitable opportunities. We also aim to build bridges with organizations that are beginning or deepening this work, recognizing that progress requires conversation, learning, and collective action.
- Our Resources: Where we have the ability to influence how resources are spent, we seek opportunities to support diverse and historically underrepresented entrepreneurs, businesses, leaders, and organizations. We believe where we direct our resources is an important part of how we demonstrate our values.
There is still work to do.
Racial equity is not a destination or a statement we can simply check off a list. It is an ongoing commitment to listening, learning, examining our practices, and taking action.
We want Venture Café Cambridge to be a place where everyone belongs, everyone can contribute, and everyone has the opportunity to connect with the people and resources that can help turn an idea into impact.
We invite our community to be part of that work.
